Something about my hero's first name (Matt) has been bugging me for a few days now. Every time I went to type it in I'd catch myself typing in another male character's name or hesitating. Last night I realized my problem.
In my December 07 release, Win, Lose...or Wed!, I have a secondary character named Matt. Not only is he named Matt, but he's a paramedic. Matt Porter in Christmas on the Mountain is a search and rescue guy. But they are totally different characters.
It's a little too close, don't you think?
Luckily, the AAs for SOS Marry Me are sitting right next to me so I can change Matt Porter's name in there, too. He makes a brief appearance in that story. The problem now is I need a new first name. Some names just come to me, but other times, like now, I draw a blank. Not good when I need to come up with something by tonight so I can make the change before I email my proposal.
Anyone want to help? The new name must fit with the last name Porter and sound good with my heroine's first name Carly.
Here's a list I came up with after scanning a list of climbers I found via google, but I'm not limiting his name to these:
Jed
Blake
Wyatt
Bryden
Sean
Ben
Mark
Do any of those sound like a search and rescue hero-type guy who also owns a brewpub? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I like Blake
I like Ben
Jed goes well with owning a brewpub
I have heroes named Jed and Ben... good, simple, solid names.
Thanks Dru and Marianne.
A friend emailed me her choices:
Sean - This works
Ben - This works
Mark - I like this one!
Of course hubby reminded me that I already had a hero named Ben Mendoza in my my mermaid book so I need to scratch that name off the list.
Hubby came up with a couple more: Dax, Jake, Rex.
We're in the middle of our annual fantasy football draft and one person thought of these:
Quinn
Alex
Sam
What about a simple David? I do like Sean and Wyatt. Sean the best though.
Hope you are having a fun day!
Melissa, which names do you like?
My top three in no particular order are:
Sean
Mark
Jake
If I were to pick from those three, I would pick Sean.
After the football draft, we sat around brainstorming names. Oh, boy, you should have heard what they came up with! But I am tossing around one of the names. Jack.
Jack Porter.
Sean Porter.
Mark Porter.
Jake Porter.
Decisions, decisions!
Okay, his name is Jackson and everyone calls him "Jack".
I did a global replace with the names and Sean looked too similar to Iain which is the heroine's dead fiance.
I ended up changing the heroine's sister in law's new husband's name too since I couldn't have a Jon and a Jack.
I have until I need to turn in my AAs to decide if that's really going to be his name or not.
Thanks for the help!
Scratch that. The Jack looked too similar to Nick, the dead brother, so I'm going with Jacob/Jake.
Subject to change again, of course!
I like how you come up with your names, so is it Jacob/Jake? Jake is better sounding.
His name is Jacob, but everyone calls him Jake except his father and the heroine. She calls him that because she remembers her brother telling her Jake doesn't like being called Jacob. Jake and Nick, her brother, weren't always nice to Carly when they were growing up so that's the one way she could get back at him. This little tidbit just came to me as I was doing the final read-thru and got added to chapter 3 last night. Makes a cute exchange, I hope!
oooh, I like that extra tidbit.
Well, I'm obviously too late chiming in. I was going to say Nick. :)
Haha Tori! Nick's the heroine's dead brother!!!!
The two things I'm not willing to change are the names of the climbers that die in the beginning of the book. There's a fun story behind that, but you'll have to wait until I'm promoting that book next year to find out;)
