Four year olds and sparkly lips

Yesterday, my almost five year old daughter, Rose, wanted to go to the coffee shop. I assumed she wanted to go to the one we'd been to on Tuesday (i.e. the one that is mainly a play area.) Nope, she wanted to go to a little Italian one (with no play area or toys) instead. The only other thing on our agenda was a trip to the library to read and both places are close to each other so I said sure. Rose put her purse (a stuffed Chihuahua bag the same color as Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell) over her shoulder and off we went.

After she finished her hot chocolate, Rose placed her purse on her table. "It's time to put on my make-up."

"Make up?" I asked.

Rose nodded. "I need to do my lips."

I wasn't sure what this meant so I just sat back and watched. She removed a tube of Disney Princess Chapstick. She carefully took off the lid and rubbed it across her lips.

"Good job," I said.

She put away the tube. "I'm not done, Mommy."

Next, she pulled a mini tube of pink lipstick with a picture of Sleeping beauty on it. She rubbed that on her lips.

"Oh, what a nice touch," I said. "Your lips are shinier now."

She gave me one of those looks as she put the lipstick away. "I'm still not done, Mommy."

I'm not much into makeup. Lately I've been using a bit of a tinted moisturizer and a dab of mascara and that feels like a lot to me. "Sorry."

Rose held a tube of pink princess lip gloss, the kind with a sponge on the end, in her hand. She carefully ran the gloss over her bottom lip, dipped the sponge back into the tube and then glossed her top lip. She screwed the top back on and placed it in her purse. She looked inside the bag. "Oh no."

"What?" I asked.

"I forgot my mirror," she said with a pout.

"Let me see."

She looked up at me.

Remember how women wanted to know what lipstick Monica Lewinsky had used in her television interview with Barbara Walters because her lips looks so good? This was pretty close.

Rose had gotten a lovely color, perfect gloss and just the right sparkle from her three step combo. I removed an extra bit of gloss from the corner of her mouth. "You're lips are perfectly sparkly."

She beamed. "Thank you."

"So how did learn how to do this?" I asked, knowing it wasn't from watching me.

"Mackenna taught me," she said.

Hmmm. My nine year old knows how do this? Forget hitting the Bobbi Brown counter. Maybe I should be asking my nine year old for some make up tips instead?

Who taught you to put on make-up? Do you wear make-up a lot, sometimes or never?

I went to modeling school -- they taught me to apply my make-up! For many, many years I never left the house without my war paint. Now? I almost never wear it. I'm lucky if I brush my hair!! LOL...

And, the thing with Rose? SO CUTE.

Man, it's been so long I don't even remember how I learned about makeup. How sad is that?

Sooo cute about Rose!

I go au natural, sounds like your 5 year old wears more than me!

I've never been much for makeup, and don't wear any now unless it's a Special Occasion (but usually not even then, because I don't have any on hand!), but I think my Mom taught me during her Mary Kay days.

I only remember my mom wearing lipstick - bright red. I probably saw my older sister (4 1/2 yrs) put it on. When I worked I paid a lot more attention to makeup. I still don't go out without some eyeliner but I wear less and less of the other stuff. Rose sounds adorable!

Awww, how precious! Daughter has about 15 tubes of different lip glosses and chapsticks. *g*
My Mom taught me to apply make-up and let me experiment with hers when I was very young, she said it would get the garishness out of my system. *g* (We're talking 5 yrs old.) When I started to wear make-up I took my Mom's advice that less is more and that enhancing what is natural is best. *g* These days though? Um, tinted chapstick. That's it. If it's a VERY special occasion I drag out the mascara and eye liner. *g*

Normally I don't wear make up, unless I was in a good mood. When I feel great I want to look great. Too bad the formula can't work vice versa:(
When going to interviews and special occasions I apply light make up to look older.

It's funny but my niece is four years old and she also knows all about make up. She watches TV fashion and make up programs and pays attention more than she do with cartoons.

I am lost with makeup. I hardly ever wear it - but there are some blogs or posts on youtube which show you how to apply makeup. It's nice too, because you can actually see what the person is doing and what the end result looks like.

I dont't really know how to apply makeup (and I don't think I will be learning soon!!) as a sheer lip gloss is the only thing I put in the morning... which is weird, because my mom wears her makeup beautifully!

I don't wear make-up since my skin is too sensitive.

I just thought that was the most precious moment seeing Rose apply make-up.

Hey, Melissa, long time.

Cute Rose story!

I have no idea how I learned how to do makeup. Probably just experimented in high school, I guess. I grew up at a time where shocking blue eyeshadow was the rage...not to mention it looked like horrible on my brown eyes...

Wow, modeling school, Marianne. Did you like it? You're lucky they taught you to do make-up. No one taught me until I went to a cosmetic counter. I've always wondered if that's why I never wore the stuff when I was younger (and not much now). I didn't know how to apply it! And I'm so there about not even brushing my hair. The only thing I always brush is my teeth!

Tori - not sad. I think for some make-up was a big deal, for others not so much.

tetewa - nothing wrong going without it. I remember my dad telling me when I was in my mid-twenties if I wore make-up and did my hair, I'd be able to find a husband! But not doing either didn't keep me from finding a great one. And he's really not into makeup. Prefers the au-natural look.

Amy - Oh, I remember Mary Kay. I went to one of their parties. They did half your face and you tried to match it. Mine never looked that good. And I had a Mary Kay person do my makeup on my wedding day. She worked at the salon who did my hair. She did a great job, applying just the right amount. I was so worried I'd look and feel like a clown!

catslady - my older one had red lipstick for ballet. She played with it one day. it was all I could do not to burst out laughing. I have trouble with eyeliner. I still haven't figured out how to put it on correctly!

Brandy - I let my girls experiment all they want. Then stick them in the shower! Those tinted lip glosses are nice. I find it hard to put any color on my lips though. I always think it's too much. I'm definitely in agreement with your mom. Less is more!
Until recently I only wore it for book signings, conferences or special nighttime things. But then when I was in Dallas I found some nice tinted moisturizer that's like a light foundation (and has sunscreen) that I wear a few times a week now.

Mona - that's funny you apply make-up to look older. Down the road, you'll be doing it to look younger. Your niece sounds like my 4 yo.

limecello - okay, I use YouTube all the time, but never knew that about makeup. I'll check it out. Those would be fun to watch with my girls. Thanks!

Nathalie - at your age, you don't need make up. Ask your mom for some tips though if you ever have a special even coming up or something. I bet she'd love to help you! And would be flattered you asked.

dru - sensitive skin is so hard. I have a friend who can't even wear the hypo-allergenic stuff.

Kacey - hey! It has been a long time. Thanks for stopping by! I remember that shocking blue eye shadow. I didn't have a clue about makeup in high school. I was too much of a geek, but I remember my friends wearing it and a couple of times I tried it. What were we thinking?

Melissa... the "at my age stuff" was sweet... I once asked for her help and she was so excited that she forgot to teach me and did all the tra-la-la for me!

I knew it! So asked her again for lessons. Sounds like she really knows what she's doing!
